My Favourite Building: Dawson's Heights

Charlie Russell, our newest member of the team, has selected Dawson’s Heights in south London as his favourite building.

The building was designed by Kate Macintosh in the 1960s, as part of a greater project in the UK to clear out the final slums.  Macintosh worked as an architect for Southwark council, and was just 28 when she designed the building.

Described as the ‘Italian hill town in Dulwich‘, it is built from an earthy red brick and follows the contours of the landscape. Charlie says:

‘It’s a real social and physical mega-structure, and was designed with stepped ends to diminish its size and break up the suburban block feel. Each flat has a balcony, creating a universal access to the amazing view over London. Having lived in the shadow of the building for some time, it has become a fascinating feature of my daily life.’
