House Style with Charlene Prempeh and James Goodhead

After giving us a tour of their Georgian home in Margate, Kent, Charlene Prempeh and James Goodhead share their House Style…

How would you describe the interiors of your home?
Charlene: “Natural.”

James: “Earthy.”

You’re happiest at home when…
Charlene: “When I’m reading in the living room, it’s sunset and the light’s coming through the window. That, for me, is a perfect time.”

James: “When we’ve got a table full of people, we’re eating amazing food, the fire’s on and we’ve hunkered down for the evening.”

If you could save one thing, what would it be?
Charlene: “The painting above the sofa in the living room, which is by my close friend Remi Ajani.”

James: “An early 1990s corduroy trench by Yohji Yamamoto, which I bought in Paris about 10 years ago.”

What is your favourite living space around the world?
Charlene: “James and I stayed in one of the Silent Living spaces in Portugal for our honeymoon. It’s in the middle of the vast wilderness. I had never felt so calm before.”

James: “Benesse House Museum in Naoshima, Japan. It’s a gallery with rooms looking out to sea. It just has the most beautiful view and there’s art everywhere. Charlene and I stayed there and would do yoga out on the grass in front of the water and the mountains. If I could go back anywhere I’ve been, it would be there.”

What was the last thing that you bought for the house?
James: “The last thing we bought for the house were the Jenny Holzer wooden postcards, which are by the stairs leading down to the basement.”

Top three coffee table books?
Charlene: “Sapeurs: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Congo by Tariq Zaidi, UK Rave Flyers…”

James: “… and Hippie Modernism, which is an amazing book with lots of images from the 1960s and 70s of projections for the future. It’s an amazing one for creative inspiration.”

If money was no object, what changes would you make?
Charlene: “I’d get the real Donald Judd bed.”

James: “I love the idea of a big garden. I feel that’s the only thing the house is missing. We’ve got a little yard in the back, but it would be great to have a nice green space.”

If people are coming over for dinner, what do you cook?
Charlene: “Something in the oven, such as a roast chicken or a slow-cooked lamb shoulder.”

What does Sunday look like here?
Charlene: “For me now, it definitely involves yoga. It would also include coffee and cookies at Fort’s and then lunch at Fort Road Hotel. I spend a lot of time by myself walking or sitting by the sea. Sundays are quite a meditative time in Margate.”

James: “Margate in the mornings is so quiet. I like to go out and have a run, watch the sun come up, or jump in the tidal pool. That’s definitely one of the best starts to the day. All the lovely things Charlene says should then follow.”

What are the best things about the neighbourhood?
James: “One of the things that came as a surprise to us here was how we can drive for five minutes and be in the middle of the countryside. Margate feels like a city by the sea, but then there’s woodland and farmland so close too. Lucky, our son, goes to a nursery where they spend all day outside in the woods, no matter what the weather is. That’s really special.”
