Brickwork, bay windows and baths: beautiful Victorian homes in London

The features of Victorian housing – large footprints, high ceilings, pretty decorative details – have stood the test of time stylistically and architecturally. Lucky for us, there is plenty of it in London – much of which has been cleverly extended, upwards and outwards, or converted into flats, which are usually generous in proportions. Here are some beautiful Victorian homes in London currently for sale, from sprawling contemporary interventions to the sensitively remodelled.

Fenwick Road, London SE15

It’s all about the light at this neat and perfectly formed flat in Peckham. A wrap-around glazed roof has been added to the back, allowing light to flood the reception room and bathroom – providing for two perfect reading spots: on the sofa and in the bath.

From the kitchen, you can see right through the concertina floor-to-ceiling glass doors to the planter-lined courtyard garden, which, come spring and summer, you’ll want to fold back to blur the boundaries between inside and out. Set yourself up with the papers, a pot of coffee and perhaps some breakfast sourced at local favourite General Store on Bellenden Road.

Pulross Road II, London SW9

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, then the cherry and peach beauty at Pulross Road will have yours singing. In fact, colour has been used to great effect all over this three-storey house, highlighting its Victorian proportions and characteristics. The aquamarine living room (and it is aquamarine to the max, including skirting boards, window frames and all) is the place to recline, read, play games or have a glass of something before retiring for the night, to one of five bedrooms. And, if you fancy a night off the stove, the culinary delights of Brixton Village are a 10-minute walk – or quick tap – away.

Templar Street, London SE5

From the outside, it’s classic Queen Anne Revival: pitched roof, cornicing and a traditionally stained glass front door, all located in Camberwell’s Minet Conservation Area. Once inside, however, you could be in a different place and time – the impressive, glass-walled extension is more Palm Springs than SE5.

It is a house of two halves, one whereby glass balustrades and a Teppanyaki grill share the same address with an original marble and cast-iron fireplace. Ultimately, it is a house that you need not leave (surely, following the year we’ve had, a prerequisite for many), given that its lower ground floor is home to a gym and cinema room. If that’s not enough to win you over, then the glass-walled shower and egg-shaped bath in the master bedroom might.

Clifton Crescent II, London SE15

This house is located within the pretty, Grade II-listed Clifton Crescent in Peckham, which dates back to 1846 and is recognisable for its green scalloped canopy above the statement triptych windows. The interior choices highlight – but modernise – the period features: the open-plan forest green kitchen has original floorboards, while exposed brickwork painted a chalky cream features throughout.

The main bedroom is hotel room-like in its configuration: an open bathroom, with a freestanding slipper tub opposite the bed, and overlooking the treetops, is a quiet luxury. The front and back gardens are the perfect spot for another Victorian tradition too: the afternoon tea party.

Step House, Estelle Road, London NW3

With the exception of the downstairs bathroom, the entire ground floor of this five-storey townhouse can be configured as a single, open-plan space, with the pewter-green kitchen at one end and the statement extension, leading out to the back garden, at the other. The extension, all stepped brick and glass, is a sculptural masterpiece (and ready for some similarly statement furniture).

Also of note is the terrazzo-like concrete flooring downstairs (all heated), as is the choice of flamboyant tiling in both upstairs bathrooms. The south-facing roof terrace is the spot for sunbathing, plus Parliament Hill lido is just a five-minute walk away should you need a cool-down.
