A 17th century alpine house in the village of Andermatt. Set over four floors, the property was remodelled by Jonathan Tuckey Design in 2012 and is a a characteristic combination of old and new.
A dramatic double height kitchen and a dining/living room with wood burning stove were created in the centre of the renovated house. This room is lined with whitened timber and the kitchen is made with black timber and granite. A mezzanine with jib door over looks the table from the master bedroom.
In contrast traditional timber panelled bedrooms and a stublii (snug) provide an eclectic atmosphere to this Alpine home.
The house is furnished with a mix of new and old furniture and paintings from England, Scandinavia, Poland and Argentina and includes a collection of books and films on Swiss and Northern Italian architecture, alpine photography and mountaineering.
There are three bedrooms (one double) and two bathrooms (bath and shower), as well as a sauna and shower for relaxation after an active day in the mountains.
Andermatt is located at 1,500m and surrounded by 3,000m mountains. In winter, it offers some of the best skiing in the Alps and is particularly well known for its off-piste and ski-touring. The cable car is a five minute walk from the house and when the snow is right it is possible to ski to the front door.
In the summer, Andermatt is used a base for mountain and road biking (Furka, Oberalp, Susten, Gotthard, Grimsel passes), mountaineering, climbing, hiking, paragliding and golf.
There are many outstanding buildings to visit by Zumphtor, Marklii, Camiana, Olgiati, Koolhaus, Galfetti, Botta, Snozzi, Miller and Maranta, all within a short drive.
The house is 1.5 hours by car from Zurich or two hours from Milan and there is parking 250m from the house.
The property is five minute walk from Andermatt train station, which is two hours from Zurich and 2.25 hours from Milan by train.
