Uncommon Projects

Uncommon Projects is a London-based studio specialising in the design, making and installation of bespoke kitchens and furniture. Founded in 2011 by architect Alan Drumm and product designer James Hoy, the company works with residential and commercial clients across the UK, and has earned a reputation for inventive contemporary design, a function-first personal approach and a material-led aesthetic.

Uncommon Projects works predominantly in plywood – a stronger and more durable alternative to industry-standard particleboard. Using ply also gives Uncommon Projects the opportunity to expose the cut edges, which lends their kitchens a distinct character and an appealing material honesty.

Design thinking is at the heart of Uncommon Projects’ bespoke approach. Thanks to their background in architecture and design, they are able to work either solo or in partnership with project architects to optimise floorplans. The kitchens they create do not simply fill the space available but are tailored to fit the lifestyles and unmet needs of their customer, as well as being sensitive to existing architectural details.

With every design being bespoke, Uncommon Projects are not limited to standard units or finishes and instead provide a fully tailored service, matching shape, size, colours, features and finishes to the needs of the space.

Their recent work has included a midcentury kitchen in Leytonstone that was named ‘Kitchen Design of the Year’ at both the Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards 2019 and the KBB Awards 2019. Uncommon Projects also created the kitchen for Tikari Works’ ‘Pocket House’ in East Dulwich, Shortlisted for RIBA House of the Year.
