"The conversion has been done to make the most of some impressive rooms and spectacular countryside views. Being a former industrial structure, many of the rooms feature soaring ceilings and exposed construction details reminiscent of urban loft buildings, yet within a more rural setting."

This remarkable house is a former electricity station located in an idyllic setting on the fringes of London in Thundridge, Hertfordshire. The building was originally converted as an artist’s studio and residence before a full refurbishment, completed by the current owners, creating a spectacular five bedroom home with over 4,000 sq ft of internal space.

The conversion has been done to make the most of some impressive rooms and spectacular countryside views. Being a former industrial structure, many of the rooms feature soaring ceilings and exposed construction details reminiscent of urban loft buildings, yet within a more rural setting. A number of the original features of the electricity station, which is thought to date back to around 1900, remain such as the restored pumping mechanisms. Views across a gentle valley in one direction and woodland in another are virtually devoid of any buildings reflecting the fact that this was formerly the country estate of a Jacobean manor house.

The house is entered via a hallway with an imposing set of double doors leading into the main living room. This is surely the most remarkable of the all the spaces in the house thanks to its industrial scale and original detailing. A step leads down into the dining room which leads into the kitchen / breakfast room. The kitchen is also directly accessible from the front hallway. Extensive glazing has been added to the area to ensure wonderful far-reaching views. On the other side of the living room is a family room leading to a second sitting room (or play room) and small study. There is also a utility room and WC on this floor.

The first floor is reached via steps from the family room, leading into a large landing which doubles as a library. Two bedrooms can be found off each side of the landing, and a WC, with a small flight of steps leading to a family bathroom and the extensive master bedroom suite. This features a main bedroom, dressing room and en suite shower room.

There is a gated parking area for a number of cars at the front of the house and a side garden that reaches around to the back of the house and borders onto open countryside.

The house is at the end of a lane that serves of a small group of scattered former service buildings, now turned into residences, that used to serve Hanbury Manor. The main Jacobean house and much of the surrounding estate now belong to Marriott, who have created a five star hotel, complete with golf course and grounds. The facilities of the hotel – such as a gym and swimming pool – can be used by the local home owners as part of a membership scheme.

Thundridge is a small historic Hertfordshire village between Hertford and Ware. It has its own primary school and pubs. Three nearby stations serve London by rail (Ware, Hertford North and Hertford East) with journey times of approximately 45 minutes. The M25 is less than ten minutes by car.
