Architect: Douglas & King

Stanley Street
London SE8

This fantastically bright three-bedroom contemporary house with private garden was designed by Douglas & King architects and completed in 2016.

The house is built from brick, partially wrapped in zinc, with a striking long form and double-pitched roof. Through the modest entrance, the ground floor is largely open plan, with a very spacious living / dining space with bi-fold doors to the private garden. Also on the ground floor is a simple galley kitchen and a shower room. The entrance hall has a large storage cupboard for coats.

The oak stairs ascend to an open landing where there’s a galleried workspace that overlooks the kitchen. There are two bedrooms at the back of the house, both with balconies, a master bedroom with built in storage, and a family bathroom.

The house has been designed to achieve a Sustainable Homes Level 4 rating. The energy generated from the solar panels on the roof is off-set against the electricity bills. There is underfloor heating throughout and the house is lit by energy-efficient LED lighting.

New Cross is a thriving area of London with a growing cultural profile that has a number of independent restaurants, bars and cafes, and is home to Goldsmiths University specialising in art and design. It is fast becoming one of South London’s most fashionable areas.

The house is very well served by public transport, just a three-minute walk (approximately) to New Cross station and a ten-minute walk (approximately) to New Cross Gate station, with direct links to Shoreditch (15 minutes approximately) and London Bridge (nine minutes approximately). The A2 provides swift access by road to Kent and the South East.
