Shepherdess Walk
London N1

This three / four-bedroom terraced house forms part of an exemplary contemporary eco development by the Swiss architects Jaccaud Zein and RIBA Award-winning developers Solidspace. It employs Solidspace’s trademark ‘split section’, which uses half levels to create exciting interior spaces with outstanding levels of natural light. The key social areas – for eating, living and working – feel connected but semi-private at the same time. This design not only creates volume, it also eradicates the traditional areas of wasted space.

Upon entering, there is a hallway with coat cupboard and guest cloakroom. A sliding door pulls back to reveal a reception room with a high-level window, a wood-burning stove and extensive amounts of storage. This dramatic double-height space has a visual connection to the kitchen / dining room on the next half level up, and a second reception area above that. A full-height glazed door leads from the dining room to the patio garden.

Level three contains a bedroom, with step-access to the garden, and a bathroom. There is a further bedroom on level four, although currently configured as a study, and reception space or gallery. Levels five and six are dedicated to a master suite with access to a very private roof terrace with a view across Shepherdess Walk Gardens.

High-quality materials and fittings have been used throughout, including polished-concrete floors, Dinesen soaped Douglas Fir floorboards, Vola taps, plaster walls polished with beeswax, and solid walnut handrails. A palette of muted tones creates a refined and restful atmosphere. The elegant exterior of the building combines Belgian brick with solid brass detailing. It has been designed with sustainability in mind, with triple-glazed windows and photovoltaic panels.

This project comprises three houses in a terrace opposite a park on Shepherdess Walk, and five split-level apartments in an adjacent building along Wenlock Street. Shepherdess Walk provides a link between City Road and the Regent’s Canal, and is favourably located a short distance from both Angel and Old Street underground stations (Northern Line). It is conveniently placed for access to the City. The shops, bars and restaurants of Islington, Shoreditch, Hoxton and Clerkenwell are within easy reach.
