"A short set of steps leads to the bedroom wing, formerly Sunday school rooms for the parish’s children, where there are four wood-panelled bedrooms that share the bucolic view".

This remarkable riverside home, situated next to the small Somerset village of Burrowbridge, occupies the site of a 19th-Century former Baptist chapel and meeting house. The property has two connected parts surrounded by a private garden; a large L-shaped building, which contains the main living quarters, and a self-contained grade II-listed chapel.

The current owners have artfully restored and decorated the house, creating two self-contained units that could be used as one. The main living space is accessed by a side entrance that opens onto a beautifully proportioned, double-height hall. There’s a dining area at the near end, a central seating area with wood-burning stove, and a library space with views over the neighbouring fields through an original lancet window.

The kitchen sits just off the living room, the form and function of which have been designed by the owner who is a cook – the units are freestanding with stainless-steel worktops. A short set of steps leads to the bedroom wing, formerly Sunday school rooms for the parish’s children, where there are four wood-panelled bedrooms that share the bucolic view. At the end of the corridor is a modern bathroom and WC.

The Chapel, once used for local talks and concerts by the previous owner, has now been converted into a separate, equally expansive living space. The demarcation of the internal layout has been cleverly conceived and sensitively executed; retaining the impressive height and volume of the primary living space, whilst creating privacy and seclusion where needed, with the original hallmarks of the Chapel successfully integrated into the interior details. Entrance is through the original chapel doors into a wood-panelled lobby. A staircase leads to the gallery, which has been arranged as a snug or guest bedroom. Downstairs, the double-height main room has another wonderfully designed kitchen with long Corian-topped prep bench, and a large open-plan living room, with light streaming in from all angles.  To the far end of the space sits a beautifully designed bedroom; a quiet, peaceful area, partitioned from the main living room. The bathroom sits adjacent, with a step down into the incredible sunken shower, which once served as part of the original Baptismal font.

The link door between the two buildings has been temporarily blocked as the current owners run the Chapel as a successful holiday let. There is a large cellar beneath the Chapel room, and a number of storage rooms accessed from the side passage that run under the main house. Coach houses at the back of the building have been converted into an office and studios / workshops. Outside, there is a large garden with vegetable patch and brick-built ‘Look Out’ which has views over the fields. At the front is the Chapel’s cemetery, and over the quiet lane is the river Parrett, which runs from Thorney Mills springs (Dorest) to Burnham-on-Sea. Burrow Mump, which can be seen from the house, is a historic site from which there are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside towards Glastonbury Tor.
