Architect: Dive Architects

Park Street, Borough Market
London SE1

A very rare example of a freehold house in the heart of historic Borough Market. Formerly a potato warehouse, the building has recently been renovated and extended by Dive Architects to an exacting standard, to include 3 bedrooms and 2 roof terraces.

Internal accommodation measures approximately 1,087 sq ft. Occupying the ground floor is a large reception / studio space with open-plan bedroom, kitchenette and wet room. This floor has its own front door onto the entrance hall, so could be let out separately. Equally, it could serve as an office or artist’s space. The first floor houses two double bedrooms (both with built-in wardrobes) and a master bathroom. On the second floor is a naturally bright kitchen / dining / reception room, with a sliding door onto a decked terrace with space for a table and chairs. A galvanised-steel staircase leads up from the kitchen to a further terrace on the roof, which is accessed via a huge electrically operated skylight.

The warehouse building was originally arranged over two floors. Dive Architects have added an extra storey with a roof terrace on top, thereby creating a fantastic space for entertaining. They have also refurbished the interior to a high specification, with the inclusion of a bespoke timber staircase, an all-white kitchen with handle-less units and a Corian worktop, and Vola bathroom fittings. The architects have retained parts of the original brick warehouse walls on the lower floors, as well as the attractive façade.

The house is located at the Borough Market end of Park Street, close to the junction with Stoney Street. The area provides a wealth of restaurants, pubs and shops, and comes alive with market stalls every week between Thursday and Saturday. The River Thames is a short walk away, as is Tate Modern. The City can be accessed by crossing the river. London Bridge station provides both Underground (Northern and Jubilee lines) and National Rail services.

Dive Architects was established by Andy Nettleton and Ia Hjärre. The practice was included in Wallpaper* magazine’s list of the 25 most innovative young architects in the world, and its work appeared in the book New Architects 2 – A Guide to Britain’s Best Young Architectural Practices.
