“A black open-tread staircase adds a contrast to the calm dual-aspect living room”

This wonderful end-of-terrace house is located on a quiet no-through road in Streatham. The living spaces have been extensively refurbished by the current owners, designed to engender a sense of calm and tactility throughout. A careful selection of wood finishes and custom joinery has highlighted the clean and simple lines of the design, while an open-tread steel staircase adds a distinctive character, allowing light to flow freely through the bright living room. A private garden extends from the rear, enclosed by trees and, in summer, their leafy canopies. Woodbourne Close is located between Tooting Bec Common (with its impressive Lido) and the north side of Streatham Common.

The Tour

A teak front door with fluted glass opens into the bright open-plan kitchen, living and dining room, which neatly encompasses the entire ground-floor footprint. The kitchen is set at the front of the room, arranged in a U shape, maximising space and delineating the separate areas.

Here, oak veneer cabinetry is topped by white countertop set against a ceramic splashback; a black Rangemaster oven is a striking focal point. At the back of the room, the eye is drawn to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, which open to the garden. A black open-tread steel staircase contrasts wonderfully with the neutral tones of the living spaces, adding an industrial touch. Bespoke birch ply storage under the stairs is perfect for storing appliances and shoes.

On the first floor are two double bedrooms on opposite sides of the plan. The restful primary bedroom overlooks the patchwork of neighbouring gardens. Built-in cupboards line one wall creating plenty of storage. At the front of the plan, the bright bedroom, currently configured as a study, has a horizontal casement window framing the surrounding tree canopy.

In the bathroom, teal ceramic tiles line the walls surrounding the bath, a wall-hung vanity adds extra storage, and a skylight illuminates the space with a soft glow.

Across the road, a garage accompanies the property, providing secure off-street parking and storage space.

Outdoor Space

Glazed doors on the ground floor open directly to a patio, creating a natural extension of the living space. Timber fencing and a perforated concrete block wall enclose the rectangular lawn, creating a peaceful and secluded atmosphere. The front of the house is paved with bricks, and there is ample space for outdoor furniture.

The Area

The house sits right in between Tooting Bec Common and the north side of Streatham Common. Nearby is Brickwood Coffee & Bread and Blackbird Bakery for good coffee and pastries, while slightly further afield, Streatham Wine House has lovely natural wine. On the other side of Streatham station is a weekly market on Babington Plaza.

It’s a fourteen-minute walk to Streatham Rail station, where Southern and Thameslink services go north to Luton and Bedford via Blackfriars, the City and Farringdon, and south to Wimbledon. Direct trains to London Bridge take around 24 minutes, while services to Blackfriars and Farringdon take 21 minutes and 25 minutes, respectively. Regular buses run along Streatham High Road to Brixton for connections to the Victoria Line.
