“An imaginatively renovated mid-century home between Peckham Rye and Camberwell”

Cutting a striking profile on the leafy tree-lined Talfourd Road in Peckham is this wonderful four-bedroom detached house. Built during the 1950s, the house is characterised by its clean architectural lines, extensive levels of glazing and playful pops of colour that highlight its mid-century origins. A large west-facing garden unfolds from the kitchen, imaginatively planted with a broad array of tropical plants and bamboo, with several carefully integrated spots to sit and enjoy the sun throughout the afternoon. The house sits in one of south-east London’s most sought-after areas, between Peckham Rye and Camberwell.

The Tour

The house is defined by its distinctive black-painted brick façade with contrasting light blue subway tiles surrounding the front door. It sits behind a low parapet wall with mature hedging for privacy. An off-road driveway has space for two cars.

The entire ground floor is given over to the open-plan living, kitchen and dining spaces, which flow into each other, each section cleverly divided by its own complimentary colour scheme. Midnight blue walls add a tranquil atmosphere to the living space, which also has an integrated wood burner in addition to the underfloor heating that runs throughout. Wide grey tiles flow underfoot in a parquet arrangement, a clever nod to the house’s original mid-century design. The dining and kitchen spaces seamlessly unfold from here, bathed in natural light care of the full-height bi-fold doors and skylights that lie beyond.

The kitchen itself is particularly vibrant, with pink Corian worksurfaces, black cabinetry and a square-tiled splashback highlighted by magenta grouting. Fully integrated appliances are by Bosch and have wifi capabilities. A separate pantry and laundry room laid with monochrome tiles is positioned just behind.

Four well-proportioned double bedrooms with large single-pane windows lie on the upper floors, along with two immaculately renovated bathrooms. Turquoise carpet in the hallway adds depth against the neutral white-washed walls. The main bedroom crowns the top of the house, painted a soft grey with patterned wallpaper by Matthew Williamson.

The house also has a garage for further storage and space for one car.

Outdoor Space

Large bi-fold doors open onto a spacious gravelled area and patio, purposefully designed for outdoor dining. A lush green lawn is lined by a beautiful array of evergreen plants and perennials, including bamboo, banana trees and aloe vera. A decked area at the rear has been purposefully arranged to catch the best of the sun. There is also a useful shed for storage.

The Area

Peckham is an incredibly popular area of south-east London due to its independent restaurants, bars and cafes, including perennial local favourites Forza WinLevan, Artusi, and Kudu. Larger establishments such as Frank’s rooftop bar, Peckham Levels and the Bussey Building attract crowds from across the city. Other excellent independent restaurants, bars, and shops include The Begging Bowl and Flock & Herd Butchers.

The popular expanse of Peckham Rye, home to the Sexby Garden, sports pitches, and The Round café, is a short walk away. Also within walking distance is the beautiful Nunhead Cemetery, a beautiful woodland oasis with fantastic views across the city skyline. Camberwell Church Street and its exciting foodie scene is close by. The Camberwell Arms is of particular note, as is Nandine, Theo’s Pizzeria and local favourite Silk Road. The highly celebrated South London Gallery is approximately five minutes on foot.

Peckham Rye is the closest station, running London Overground services to Shoreditch High Street and Dalston Junction in one direction and Clapham Junction in the other. Connections to the Jubilee Line can be reached at Canada Water in 10 minutes and the Northern Line at Clapham High Street in 11 minutes. There are also services to London Bridge in seven minutes, Blackfriars in 11 minutes, and Victoria in 15 minutes.
