“All architectural elements were treated as pieces of furniture sharing a common design language” - Tandem Studio

This contemporary one-bedroom house is positioned in the centre of Totnes, a medieval market town on Devon’s River Dart estuary. In collaboration with Tandem Studio, the current owners have transformed a former garage into an impressive, light-filled home, which seamlessly unfolds across two floors. Sympathetic materials including birch plywood and porcelain tiles have been used to create a sleek, minimalist aesthetic and a sense of continuity between the spaces. Extensive glazing features throughout, particularly at the rear, framing far-reaching views across the rolling hills beyond.

The Tour

The house is positioned at the centre of a quiet winding mews, which lies just off the main high street. Taking a considered approach to materials and designed with energy efficiency in mind, the home is characterised by a handcrafted pitched copper roof and a cedar-clad façade.

The front door opens to a lobby area with a bespoke plywood staircase, containing plenty of cleverly concealed storage. Horizontal slatted screens, which also feature in the living area, shield the stairs while allowing a sense of openness between the spaces. There is a WC and shower with underfloor heating on this floor, as well as access to the adjacent garage.

The staircase ascends to an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, where full-width glazing frames beautiful views across the rolling hilltops. The windows slide open to create a seamless sense of flow between the indoor and outdoor environments during the warmer months. The architects have cleverly configured the space, creating an expansive living environment that belies its size.

The freestanding central staircase separates the living area from the kitchen, which has cupboards accessible on three sides. The bespoke kitchen cabinetry is raised from the floor, emphasising the sense of space within the room. Italian porcelain tiles run underfoot and there is underfloor heating throughout.

The bedroom is positioned on the second floor. Natural light pours in through an abundance of triangular glazing set within the pitched roof. There are multiple skylights, each offering a different glimpse over the rooftops of Totnes, fitted with wind-up fixtures and blackout blinds. Bespoke storage in this room including open shelving and drawers maximises the space available; natural Marmoleum runs underfoot. A further slatted screen separates the bedroom from the bathroom.

The Area

South Street is located in the historic town centre of Totnes, moments from a plethora of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, notably The Hairy Barista, Greenfibres and Willow.. The town is renowned for its charming Friday market that sells local produce, vintage clothing and antiques. Nearby Dartington Trust is set within a beautiful 1,200-acre campus and presents a series of arts and cultural events throughout the year.

The town lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with Dartmoor 10 miles to the north and stunning beaches along the coastline 10 miles to the south. Brixham, Salcombe and Dartmouth are all easily accessible.

Totnes mainline rail station is only a 10-minute walk away and runs direct services to London Paddington in approximately two hours 50 minutes and to Exeter or Plymouth in 30 minutes.
