'Expansive interiors flow seamlessly together, naturally emphasising light in the use of materials and finishes'

Set within the Aldersbrook Conservation area is this excellent three-bedroom house, recently remodelled and extended by architects Whitman Wilde. The new configurations seek to emphasise the flow of natural light and introduce the finest contemporary material across nearly 1,969 sq ft of internal accommodation. At the rear the house there is a large, private back garden, with a newly installed garden studio.

The combination of Whitman Wilde’s sensitive architectural interventions and reconfigured interiors by design studio Stories, have resulted in a set of bright, expansive interiors that flow seamlessly together, naturally emphasising the flow of natural light in the use of materials and finishes.

The street-facing façade of the house is typical of its period; defined by two large bay windows it has subtle white-painted ornamentations over the porch. A new front door leads to a reception room on one side. This room has engineered-oak floorboards underfoot, bespoke Carrara marble-topped cabinetry and elegant cast-iron radiators under the window’s bay. The current owners have one half of this room configured as a home office.

Along the hallway there is a guest w/c with terrazzo tiles, as well as access to a large basement, primarily used for storage. Beyond, the side-return extension incorporates the heart of the home, a large open-plan kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is entirely bespoke. Designed by Jack Trench, it is formed of oak and Corian and includes a brass-plated Quooker tap. A skylight runs overhead, bathing the breakfast bar in wonderful levels of natural light. There is a separate utility room with an additional sink and space for washer/dryer to one side, with further storage space.

A dining area occupies a glazed bay at the rear of the house, with opening from the kitchen and this area onto the patio, formed of herringbone bricks. Raised beds lined one side of the astro-turf lawn, including a row of espaliered trees. Beautiful mature tress in the neighbouring gardens offer an excellent sense of privacy and seclusion. The foot of the garden is occupied by a newly installed garden studio, care of Pod-Space.  This space is another perfect working from environment. There are full-height glazed doors to the garden, the space is wired for internet and has underfloor heating.

The first floor is occupied by three bedrooms and a family bathroom. The master bedroom, at the front of the house, has a bespoke set of wardrobes in birch-ply, which also form an cleverly-conceived headboard with built-in reading lights and power-points. The en-suite shower room has a bespoke Kast Concrete sink and Bert & May tiles. The two further bedrooms are positioned at the rear of the plan and both have views over the garden. The family bathroom, has ceramic tiles designed by Darkroom, as well as Corian tops and a Victorian and Albert free-standing bath. There is the potential to extend up into the house’s large loft space, subject to the relevant planning permission.

The current owners have installed a secure bike shed to one side of the front yard.

The house is excellently positioned for the shops, cafes and restaurants of Wanstead village. It is also within the catchment area of Aldersbrook Primary school which was recently rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Green spaces abound. The Wanstead Flats are at one end of Herongate Road, while Wanstead Forest park, renowned locally for its carpet of bluebells, is positioned at the other end, a short walk from the house.

Wanstead Flats constitutes the southern portion of Epping Forest and is one of the largest expanses of common land in London. The Flats have a number of established walks, with wonderful views of the city. Forest Gate can be accessed on foot via the flats and has a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants.

Herongate Road is a ten-minute bus ride from Leytonstone and Wanstead Tube stations where Central line services run to central London in approximately 20 minutes respectively. Leytonstone High Road station is slightly further afield and runs London Overground services through to East London.
