What We're Seeing: Sussex Modernism

Sussex Modernism, Eileen Agar
Sussex Modernism, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy
Sussex Modernism, Eric Gill

This spring, Two Temple Place are hosting a major exhibition examining why radical artists and writers were drawn to the rolling hills, seaside resorts and quaint villages of Sussex in the first half of the 20th century, and the artistically and politically experimental communities they created there.

Over 120 artworks will showcase the connections between the artists working in this area in the early 20th century, and the modernisms represented there. The art and craft of Eric Gill, and others in the Catholic community, is compared with the Surrealist collaborations of Edward James and Salvador Dali. At the same time, the unexpected network of Serge Chermayeff, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Henry Moore and John Piper is revealed; despite common socialist ideals there was massive variation within their artistic output, from architecture and sculpture to photography and film.

The exhibition runs until 23 April. More information is available here.
