What We're Hearing: Richard Rogers Donates his Wimbledon House

We were very pleased to hear that, despite having committed buyers wanting to keep it as a private home, Richard Rogers has decided to donate the house he designed for his parents in Wimbledon to the Harvard Graduate School of Design, thereby allowing it to be utilised by future generations of architects and designers.

The Grade II* house can be comfortably described as one of the most important houses of the twentieth century, and is considered by Rogers to be one of his most successful projects.

The Rogers House was successfully marketed by The Modern House in 2013, attracting an offer at the asking price and interest from a renowned musician, a fashion entrepreneur and a yacht designer. However, the Rogers family eventually decided that they wanted the house to have a wider use, so the donation to Harvard was decided.

Once the charitable gift is finalised, the house will be renovated and restored by the architect Philip Gumuchdjian, a former colleague of Rogers. With restoration completed,  the house will primarily be used, Rogers has said, for “ the training of doctorates in the field of architecture”.
