What We're Seeing: Celebrating Segal

Residents of a unique south London housing scheme are hosting a free event to celebrate the work of the architect who designed their street.

Walter Segal, who died in 1985, will be remembered at ‘Celebrating Segal’ on Saturday 19th September, 11am-3pm.

The day will include talks, films, art and tours on Walters Way, SE23, which was designed by Segal, built by residents, and is one of two streets named after him (the other being Segal Close).

The event, which is part of Open House London, will highlight Segal’s achievements and his relevance to today’s housing mix. The Berlin-born modernist pioneered a self-build method that enabled ordinary people to construct their own homes.

It is a chance to hear from people who knew Walter and worked with him. The event will be held in the beautiful surroundings of one of Segal’s Lewisham self-build developments, and will feature:

• John Segal – Walter’s son
• John McKean – Walter’s biographer
• Jon Broome – Architect who worked with Segal
• Dave Dayes – Self-builder
• RUSS Lewisham – A new community self-build project
• Segal-inspired art
• The BBC documentary ‘The House that Mum and Dad Built’ (1982)

The event is free to attend, to register for tickets please click here.
