After visiting Dominic and Rebecca Gaunt at their self-designed home in Winchester for our ‘My Modern House’ series, we’ve been inspired to look through our homes for sale to showcase some of the best well-designed family homes currently on the market.

Christchurch Hill, London NW3
A double fronted period house in Hampstead with three bedrooms and a garden: an archetypal London family home if ever there was one. Living areas downstairs include a library, study, and large double reception room with a tall pair of sash windows looking out to the garden.

Grassmount, London SE23
This four-bedroom 1960s townhouse fuses mid-century charm with a modern fit out thanks to a complete renovation. A newly fitted kitchen – the essential component in any family home – has minimalist units, maple flooring and a central birch ply island with an easy-to-clean induction hob. A number of ‘outstanding’ primary schools in the area make this a perfect home for a young family.

Great Brownings, College Road, London SE21
This four-bedroom detached house forms part of a verdant estate designed in 1966 by Malcolm Pringle of Vernon and Partners. Responding to the topography of the nearby Great North Wood, Pringle arranged the house over three tiered levels, providing views of the city to the north and woodland to the south; ideal for parents grappling with the age-old ‘should we raise the children closer to nature?’ dilemma.

Gorst Road, London SW11
This beautiful five-bedroom house is one for larger families. It’s been exceptionally put together, with interior designer Marie-Sophie Roussel working in collaboration with David McGahon and Greg Walton of Studio McW to introduce modern materials and spatial sensibilities to the original Victorian house.

Fulbourn, Cambridge
Don’t want to raise children in the city? This four-bedroom house on a leafy lane in Fulbourn, a peaceful village five miles outside Cambridge city centre, offers an idyllic alternative. The generous volumes and functional layout are well suited to family living, while a large garden can cope with the odd children’s party or two.
