House Style with Matthew Calvin

After showing us around his converted warehouse space in east London, jewellery designer Matthew Calvin shares his house style.

You’re happiest at home when…
The flat is definitely a winter space. Now that the evenings have drawn in it’s a great flat to curl up with a blanket in. After a busy day at the studio, it’s so nice to come home and relax with Joe and Colin, our dog.

How would you describe the interiors of your house?
I would describe the interiors as minimal but cosy. There is plenty of room but it doesn’t feel sparse, which I think is really important.

If you could only save one thing, what would it be?
It’d have to be the black Eames chair I have in my bedroom. It’s such a classic piece and the comfiest chair I’ve ever sat in.

What was the last thing you bought for the house?
We travelled to Japan in January, luckily just before the travel restrictions began. We bought some really beautiful things including the traditional wooden dolls, called Kokeshi, which are really lovely mementoes.

Top three coffee table books?
I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of Faberge’s film about the history of the brand. They gifted all of the guests a limited edition book with detailed photography of all the pieces found to date. It’s enormous, weighs about 20kg and definitely deserves to be my only choice.

If money was no object, what changes would you make?
I would buy the apartment upstairs, knock through and create a two-storey duplex. I’d first have to convince my lovely neighbours to sell, however!

You’re having people over for dinner: what do you cook?
Raclette is a favourite, there’s nothing like melting cheese and pouring it over potatoes and salad. It’s also really easy to prepare and the guests do their own cooking – win-win.

What does a Sunday here look like?
Very chilled. Perhaps a walk down to Columbia road flower market to grab a last-minute bargain bunch of flowers. Followed by a very late lunch with a glass of wine.

What are the best things about the neighbourhood?
There is so much going on around Liverpool Street. With the river only a 10-minute walk away, Spitalfields around the corner and so many great restaurants and bars there’s always something to do.

How long will you be here for?
For some time now we have been talking about relocating to Portugal. However, with the current climate and travel restrictions, we might have to wait before making the move.
