Inspiration: Nottingham Playhouse

For our newest blog series, staff at The Modern House were asked to list the location, film, painting, building, or piece of music that first inspired their interest in Modernism.

Andrew joined the sales team at the end of 2015 after completing his undergraduate degree at King’s College London.  Originally from Nottingham, his love affair with modernism began with visits to the city’s Playhouse as a child.

Andrew says: ‘it’s just a really cool building.  I can remember visiting when I was really young with my family, so now just seeing it gives me instant waves of nostalgia.  But also visually it’s beautiful and just so radical for the city. It was quite controversial when it was first built, but what good building wasn’t?’

The Nottingham Playhouse was designed by Peter Moro, who had previously worked on the Royal Festival Hall and for Tecton.  It was designed to be a source of local pride, in keeping with principles of Modern theatre design, which focused on function ‘rather than glitz‘.
