German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed The Farnsworth House as a weekend retreat for Dr. Edith Farnsworth between 1945-51.

The glass pavilion sits outside Chicago amid a 10-acre woodland plot, and is typical of Mies’ post-war style which championed clarity, simplicity, and a strong relationship with nature. Mies designed the house to be as light as possible on the landscape by raising it 5ft from the ground, allowing only the eight L-shaped supporting steel columns to meet the ground.
