House of the Day: David Haid's Glass House

James Speyer, Glass House, The Modern House

This glass house, designed in 1974 by David Haid was an extension of a larger modernist house built in 1953 by the Modernist architect James Speyer. Both Speyer and Haid were dedicated followers of Mies van der Rohe, whose influence on the glass house is apparent.

This pavilion – originally designed to showcase the owner’s car collection – was made famous by its appearance in John Hughes’ 1987 classic film ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’.
