Architect: Cherubino Gambardella
Itri Villa, Lazio, Italy
From approx £1,970
Designed by award-winning architect Cherubino Gambardella, this villa is nestled in an olive grove in Itri with stunning views, overlooking both the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aurunci mountains.
Known to locals as the ‘Zucca Bianca’ or ‘White Pumpkin’, the house is based on the redesign of an unfinished reinforced concrete skeleton known in Italian as a ‘cemento armato’.
The initial structure determined the pitch of the roof, and forms the concrete framework visible in the living room. The house is surrounded by a large private terrace that opens the living spaces up to the outside, and takes advantage of the mountainous views.
The distinctive white ceramic tiles of the facade are broken up by colourful accents at the entrance and base of the house, whilst the interior is sleek and modern, with a polished concrete floor. The architect, Cherubino Gamberdella, is considered one of the most influential contemporary architects in Italy.
The house has two large double bedrooms, as well as two smaller bedrooms which can comfortably sleep up to four children. The lounge and kitchen / dining area are open-plan, allowing for maximum views out onto the sea and surrounding olive groves.
The large terrace surrounding the house leads to an infinity pool with a deck, a whirlpool and two outdoor showers. There is also a small courtyard at the back of the house, with several blossoming lemon trees, and the property is surrounded by olive groves which produce their own olive oil every year.
The house has satellite television, WiFi, a stereo system and a washer-dryer.
There is space for up to three cars in the driveway.
The house is situated just outside the small town of Itri. The beautiful beaches of Sperlonga and Gaeta are a 15-minute drive away. It is also possible to do day trips to the island of Ponza.
Walkers will find a tremendous number of trails to explore in the nearby Aurunci mountains and along the coastline.
Itri is situated between Rome and Naples. It can be easily reached by car (approx. 150km from Rome, 100km from Naples). There are also good connections by train from Rome and Naples to Itri and the nearby town of Formia.
There are international flights out of Fiumcino and Naples airports.
