Architect: Wilson & Carter
Bab Doukkala House, Essaouira, Morocco
From £900 per week
This striking white house is situated at the back of Essaouira’s fortified medina.
The house has been renovated by design partners Emma Wilson and Graham Carter, and combines traditional Moroccan living with 21st-century comfort and style.
An organic modern living space has been moulded around ancient sandstone columns and thuya wood ceilings. An eclectic mix of colourful lighting and furnishings has been added, mainly from the 1960s era. There is a telephone in the house for visitors to use if required, as well as Bose speakers for use with an iPod, and wireless internet access. There is also a large selection of books, CDs and board games.
Each guest is given a guided tour of the medina by the English owners, who will point out the good restaurants and activities, including a cookery school, hammam, horse riding, kite surfing, trips to secluded beaches, swimming pools and souks.
For around £10 per head, a chef will cook a traditional Moroccan meal and bring it to the door.
The food markets are virtually on the doorstep, and the town’s long sandy beach is approximately ten minutes away on foot.
The property is 2.5 hours by road from Marrakech or Agadir. Direct flights to Essaouira from Paris. Transfers to and from Marrakech can be arranged with the owners.
Jan-Dec £300 per person per week (minimum three people)
