A contemporary house set in the grounds of an old Mayan plantation in the Yucatán region of Mexico.
Surrounded by water lily reflecting ponds and two acres of lush, green lawns, this 2,000 sq ft house was designed by renowned Mexican architect Salvador Reyes Rios in 2009. The property is constructed of hard woods, limestone and plaster polished to a sleek finish by the ancient Mayan technique chukum. It received the Cemex Building Award for best residential build in Mexico and was also awarded first place in the international residential division.
The two-acre garden is filled with thousands of fireflies at dusk: an extraordinary sight that is reminiscent of an fibre optic illumination and which has been described by guests as ‘magical’ and ‘impossible to put into words’.
The accommodation is comprised of two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen/living/dining area with glass sliding walls that open out onto a 30ft pond on one side and a 30ft infinity pool on the other. There are daily housekeepers and gardeners.
The house is 35 minutes by car from the Yucatán’s capital city Mérida. A vibrant and cultural centre, Mérida has an abundance of beautiful colonial buildings, museums, art galleries, restaurants, and shops. Within a 60 minute round car trip, are many historical Mayan sites, including Chichen Itza (just named as one of the seven wonders of the modern world), Uxmal and Mayapan.
Mérida International Airport is 45 minutes by car. Cancún International Airport is three hours by car.
